Crafting Jewish Style wishes you a Happy and Sweet New Year!

I like setting the holiday table early. This way every time I pass the dining room I feel that I am more prepared than I really am. For Rosh Hashanah I usually fill vessels with apples, pomegranates and other fruit for an easy and autumnal themed centerpiece. I fill out the arrangement with hydrangeas from the garden and/or  mums or some other Fall flowers from Shoprite.

For the place settings I've purchased mini pomegranates and placed a die cut circle with a Shanah       Tova sticker on it on top of the pomegranate. I find that pomegranates make great decorations and we love eating them both for their symbolism and because they taste great! I can't wait to try them     in Maya's recipe.

 It's hard to believe that another year has once again flown by. Its a time of reflection as well as a time of hope and prayers. In the midst of all the cooking, baking and mundane preparations (Does everyone have ironed shirts for shul? Did I cook enough food?...) I send up small requests (OK, big ones too) that this year should truly be a good and peaceful one for everyone.
I wish you all a year of happiness, peace, good health, prosperity and may all your prayers be answered for the good!

It is wonderful to light the Hanukkah candles every night. I love having out all the menorahs and dreidels. We, of course, had latkes last night for dinner. We fried the traditional potato latkes, but I hear its a brave new world in latke land... all sorts of new flavor combos and exotic toppings are emerging....Move over potato latkes and apple sauce and sour cream, here come mimosa latkes!

Hannukah banner

Welcome to our first Hannukah post! This year I decided to put a little bit more effort in our Hannukah decorations and made a festive banner. I used the back side of the Hannukah paper kit packaging to die-cut the letters and to make the decorative border at the bottom of the banner.

The paper rosettes are made from 1.5"x18" strips of paper. I punched the long edge of the strip using Fiskars "Boundary Waters" border punch, made an accordion fold along the strip, formed a circle shape and glued it all together.

I like all the bright and festive colors. It reminds me the Hannukah candles. What about you dear readers? Do you decorate for Hannukah? Please share with us!

It's been a really hot summer so far here (nothing like last summer's rainy unseasonably cool weather) and while a dip in the pool or a trip to the beach is the way to go-especially if you have kids to entertain-sometimes there's nothing like a nice air conditioned environment to relax in.

Here's a great project to do together with your child or youth group, indoors (AC running) on a hot summer day. This cute paper mache wall/door hanging would also be a great pre-holiday make and take.

For this project I took a paper mache letter "S", my little one's initial, that I found in Michael's.
You will need:
Paper Mache letter
acrylic paint and foam brushes
scrapbook paper
Scissors
wet glue or Mod Podge, brayer or bone folder
stamp pad
embellishments of your choice
ribbon
hot glue gun

1. Paint the inner and outer sides pink (or the color of your choice), let dry.
2. Trace the front and back of the letter onto the back of your chosen scrapbook paper. I used the pink distressed polka dots from the Passover collection.
3. Adhere the papers to the letter with a wet adhesive (such as Zip Dry or Mod Podge). Smooth out any air bubbles with a brayer or bone folder. Let dry.
4. Ink the edges with a small stamp pad, in a coordinating color of your choice.
5. Embellish the front of your letter with flowers, buttons, wood shapes, etc.
6. Use a hot glue gun to attach a looped length of ribbon to the top of the letter. Hot glue a bow on top.
Viola! You're done!
